£ 1.9million fisheries subsidy support program launched
The Maritime and Fisheries Fund for Northern Ireland replaces the now fully committed European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.
Financial support totaling Â£ 1.9 million for fisheries and aquaculture stakeholders is available until March 31, 2022.
The new funding is designed to deliver benefits to fishermen, processing and aquaculture companies, port authorities, inland fishermen and stakeholders with environmental interests.
Announcing the opening of the program during a visit to the port of Portavogie, Minister Poots said: âI am pleased to announce the opening of the Â£ 1.9million Maritime and Fisheries Fund (Ireland from North) with immediate effect.
âAs funding has been provided by HM Treasury in the form of a ‘one-year settlement’, I encourage stakeholders to engage quickly with my department so that claims can be submitted as soon as possible, as this funding must be used by March 31st. 2022.
âDuring my visit to the Port of Portavogie, I saw the benefits of such programs for our local fishermen and businesses, such as investing in new machinery and infrastructure, which in turn allows them to remain competitive at within the industry in these difficult times.
Speaking on the future of the local fishing industry, Minister Poots added: âMy department will implement this program in tandem with the development of a five-year strategy for future support to the fishery from April 2022, which will reflect the current focus on sustainability. , green growth, blue economy, resilience and adaptation to the post-Brexit landscape.
The 2021/22 support is similar to the previous EMFF funding program in terms of the submission of applications and aims to support safer fishing initiatives, investments on board fishing vessels, innovative projects and processes, marketing initiatives and research; more selective fishing gear and practices; and port infrastructure developments as well as investments by fish processors and aquaculture operations.
