Annual Phuket Fishing Contest Confirmed

FISHING: The Phuket Municipality, in conjunction with the Phuket Fishing Sport Club, has announced that the 2022 Phuket Fishing Tournament will take place from March 25-27 with over B120,000 in prize money.
13and edition of the tournament will be held at Chaloem Phrakiat Rama 10 Park in Saphan Hin and aims to promote marine tourism while boosting the local economy.
All proceeds from the competition and an associated fish auction will be used to help Phuket Municipality purchase medical equipment and supplies, help the disabled, the elderly, the underprivileged and the Soi Dog Foundation.
There will be three categories of boats allowed to participate in the competition: fast boats, motor boats and long tail boats. Entry fees are set at 1,000 baht per person in the first two categories and 500 baht per person for the second. Teams must not exceed more than five people per boat (excluding captains and children on motorboats).
Participants must provide their own boat. If this is not possible, they are invited to contact the organizers before the event who can either find a boat to rent or assign a place in a team already registered.
Fishing gear allowed is standard duck rod and unlimited reel – hand line is not allowed. The rules of the international fishing association will be implemented and respected, the organizers confirmed. The competition is open to amateurs and professionals alike.
Game fish allowed include organic fish or wahoo fish, barracuda, monk fish, snakehead fish, rainbow fish, snapper, tuna, grouper and all kinds of sea bass. exception of widemouth fish. Additionally, there are three types of special fish: Char Grouper, Golden Fish, and Amber Jack.
Organizers have confirmed there are over B120,000 in prizes up for grabs, which will be divided among four categories of judges determined by fish weight and species.
Saroj Angkhanapilas, the mayor of Phuket Town, said the event will help promote both tourism and careers in the maritime and fishing industry.
