Dozens of Massachusetts country clubs and golf courses have obtained PPP approvals

Nearly 70 golf courses and country clubs in Massachusetts have been approved for loans of at least $150,000 from the Paycheck Protection Program, according to data from the US Small Business Administration, as some face multiple winds contrary despite an affluent clientele and an ability to offer outdoor recreation in times of social distancing.
While some local country clubs are thriving, others have already been struggling in recent years under a heavy debt burden
and the decline in popularity of golf since the early 2000s. The coronavirus-fueled recession has made matters worse. When households face financial pressures, club dues may be one of the first things cut.
While golf has been allowed for weeks in Massachusetts under the state’s reopening plan, many country clubs and golf courses are missing out on other key revenue streams.
Banquets and private golf events are a cash cow for many clubs, and these have largely been wiped out since the pandemic took hold. Nationally, the average club saw its non-dues revenue decline by 66%, from an average of $446,308 in April 2019 to $150,280 in April 2020, according to a national study by Club Benchmarking, based in Boston, which provides consulting services to country clubs.
The Granite Links Golf Club in Quincy took out a PPP loan of about $1.6 million, which allowed the semi-private course to bring back many of its employees as golfers started hitting the links again, a said Mary Orlando, chief financial officer of parent company Marina Bay. management services.
Still, a significant portion of the club’s cash flow from golf and restaurant sales goes to repay deposits for canceled weddings and other events, according to Orlando.
Some clubs did not have the option of a PPP loan because they are registered as 501(c)7 nonprofit organizations, which are not eligible for PPP loans through the SBA.
According to Joe Abely, director of Club Board Professionals, which advises on country clubs, the divide has created a world of haves and have-nots in the club business.
“How clubs react to this crisis will determine whether they survive in the future,” he said. “These knee-deep in debt clubs are going to struggle in 2021.”
