Lord Andrew Adonis has faced a huge backlash from social media users who have lashed out at his Labor counterpart for his attempts to blame Brexit for the truck driver shortage sweeping the UK.
Speaking to LBC, he said: âThe big change, as the Road Haulage Association has pointed out, has been Brexit.
“Exacerbated, of course, by the Covid crisis which caused many drivers to return [home].
âYou have to understand the interaction between the two. It is undoubtedly true that a lot of drivers have left the country because of Covid, it is absolutely true because a lot of people have returned to their country of origin, and we had a large number of European drivers.
“But they didn’t come back, that’s the point. And they didn’t come back because the Brexit bureaucracy makes it difficult, that means all the time they have to spend to get through the bureaucracy at the border makes it less economical to come.
“But also, their employment status is in danger and this means that they no longer have the right to come back to the country as they did before when there was a single market.”
But Lord Adonis’ assessment has come under attack from listeners who have taken to social media to dismantle his argument over Brexit causing the UK shortages.
