Expectations of poultry farmers and fishermen from the 2022 EU budget

NEW DELHI: To sustain the momentum of the previous year, which saw more investment and technology adoption, the Union Budget 2022 must focus on growing the thriving agricultural ecosystem.
The sector has enormous scope in terms of fiscal needs for increased digitization and improved infrastructure to drive innovation.
While agri-tech and aquaculture industries seek R&D incentives and the introduction of formal finance and insurance in the 2022 Union budget, the former also expect tax benefits improve the sector.
The Kisan credit card system was introduced to protect farmers from moneylenders and to provide loans for cultivation.
According to sources, the government is planning to make a huge statement for farmers in the 2022 Union budget.
Farmers often avoid insurance because of high premiums. This problem can be solved by subsidizing premiums. This can benefit farmers by reducing their risk.
Also, expanding the KCC fishing limit from the current scope will help farmers fully cover their farming costs.
Since India is one of the largest producers of fish in the world and also holds one of the top positions in aquaculture production, the government must prioritize the welfare of the fishers in addition to increasing the fish production using state-of-the-art technology.
In these modern times where the emphasis is on skills development, why should fishers and farmers be left out of capacity building and skills upgrading?
Thus, it is time to embrace technology and educate unorganized sectors to adopt robust technologies including fish farming technology – environmental biofloc etc. to increase farmers’ income through agriculture and sustainable aquaculture. This will allow them to access and understand updated technology and improve unit productivity.
The government’s effort should be to stimulate new ideas and undertake comprehensive progress through sustainable administration and protection of marine fisheries assets, expansion of fish production and value addition through the handling and enhancement of fish in seaside areas, the creation of new enterprises and the encouragement of aquaculture.
Although the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) has been successful, it requires a blue revolution 2.0 with more emphasis on digital advancements for optimal pre and post production processes.
After all, it is high time to revolutionize agricultural techniques that can improve production and guarantee quality products.
It is time to use the sea wisely by boosting marine cage farming and deep-sea fishing in coastal and offshore waters, respectively.
In addition, fisheries infrastructure, including cold chain, ports and hygienic fish landing areas, requires intervention for the overall growth and development of the sector.
The cold chain plays a crucial role in the meat and seafood industry, as the freshness of products is highly dependent on it. Cracking the technical code of this cold chain will benefit farmers and fishermen.
