Expert estimates shipbuilding industry will generate 3.5% of Russia’s gross national product
Tendering procedure for the acquisition of equipment within the framework of shipbuilding projects is among the key factors hampering the development of the industry
The shipbuilding industry generates 3.5% of Russia’s gross national product while employing around 1% of the country’s labor force, IAA PortNews correspondent Oleg Timofeyev, dean told the roundtable. of the Faculty of Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering of the St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University. meeting “Maritime engineering, shipbuilding and technologies for the development of the world’s oceans” held within the framework of the International Scientific Forum “Caspian 2021: paths to sustainable development”.
“It is a very efficient industry in terms of labor resources,” he said.
The industry has approximately 180,000 employees and attracts some 700,000 employees from related sectors.
According to the expert, the Russian shipbuilding sector has more than 2,000 companies (shipbuilding or ship repair are among their main activities). Among them are around 120 shipyards, around 40 design offices and 15 scientific and research institutes. Half of the largest shipyards are state owned.
There are two integrated structures in the industry: United Shipbuilding Corporation (44 companies representing more than 70% of the total capacity) and Concern of Marine Instrument Engineering and Naval Armament.
Among the problems hampering the development of the industry, Oleg Timofeyev mentioned the tendering procedure for the acquisition of equipment in the framework of shipbuilding projects. In his opinion, this makes the construction process several times longer.
In addition, shipbuilding needs technological modernization.
Another annoying factor is insufficient experience in designing competitive niches (fishing vessels, dredging equipment, passenger vessels) that can be successfully overcome in the future – some of the types mentioned above are already being developed. construction by national shipyards. In the meantime, the problem of restrictions on the attraction of foreign suppliers can be solved in the future by establishing local manufactures.
