Four top financial tips that finance experts have collected from their own mothers

TODAY we celebrate our moms and their wisdom. . . for, as the old saying goes, “Mother knows best.”
We asked four financial experts to share the best financial advice they’ve gathered from their own mothers.

Here is what they said.
Sarah Coles, financial analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown: “Mom taught me not to spend money just to feel better. Figure out what the problem is, then fix it instead.
“When you visit an upscale neighborhood, step into the charity shop,” she said.
“You’ll often find designer clothes that cost less than buying shoddy labels new.
“We treated flea markets like Black Friday and got up at dawn for the best bargains. It was way more fun than browsing the high street.”

Charlotte Jessop, founder of looking afteryourpennies.com: “When I got my first assistant job at Currys at 16, Mom told me to ‘save half and it’ll last twice as long’, which helped me accumulate some money for the university.
“She also said, ‘Take care of your pennies and the books will take care of themselves’. I loved that so much that it inspired the name of my company.
Sarah Tucker, founder of brokerage The Mortgage Mum: “Follow everything. I watched Mom one weekend in her dressing gown doing the family accounts.
“There was always a sense of calm around her. She taught me how to organize all my direct debits and categorize expenses so I could budget for the coming year.
“I also got into the habit of cross-checking what was on my credit card to make sure I recognized every transaction.”
Rachel Springall, finance expert at moneyfacts.co.uk: “Mom taught me to save little and often. She encouraged me to always plan for the unexpected.
“Now I have money set aside to cover emergencies. It has helped endlessly when appliances break.
