Toothfish, Dissostichus eleginoides, has been described as a resource of very high economic value in various world markets, given the quality of its flesh

A workshop on toothfish as part of an ambitious fisheries improvement project sponsored by Argentina’s National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development, INIDEP, was held with the participation of a Chilean expert, Professor Christian Canales who teaches at the University of Valparaiso.

The theme of the workshop was “Estimation of the Objective Biological Reference Point” as an approximation of maximum sustainable performance. and a definition of the rules for catching toothfish.

Dr Canales was supported by INIDEP researchers from the Austral and Sub Antarctic Demersal Fisheries program and the first discussion focused on abundance indices and the assessment of current resource exploitation, as well as a analysis of the different catch control rules.

The toothfish, Dissostichus eleginoides, has been described as a resource of very high economic value in different world markets, given the quality of its flesh, in addition to being considered one of the most remarkable species of the ocean. southern.

It is a species of great longevity, slow maturation and behavior and therefore very sensitive to overexploitation, which makes its fishery one of the most regulated in the South West Atlantic.

In the mid-1980s, trawlers and longliners began to exploit toothfish, with a predominance of trawling and the establishment of fishing quotas for the species.
