Livelihoods threatened in the fisheries sector
MEMBERS of the Santa Pola fishing fleet joined last week’s demonstration in Villajoyosa to protest against restrictive EU measures.
The demonstration brought together not only the fishermen of Santa Pola, but also the local mayor Loreto Serrano and several city councilors who wanted to show their support for the sector.
Like trawlers throughout the Spanish Mediterranean fleet, the Santa Pola contingent agreed that they risked ruin once they were only allowed 120 working days per year instead of 190 viable days.
Brussels regulations would endanger thousands of jobs that depend directly and indirectly on trawling, they warned
“Bottom trawling is sustainable and has been since time immemorial,” they argued. “It is an engine of the economy along the Mediterranean coast.”
