Propspeed selected by the Stark group
Propspeed, a leading innovator in underwater anti-fouling coatings, today announced that it has been selected by Ocean Fisheries Ltd. as the preferred anti-fouling coating for its fleet of commercial fishing vessels. Based in Lyttelton, New Zealand and part of the Stark group of companies owned and operated by the Stark family, Ocean Fisheries Ltd. was founded in 1967 to encompass the company’s commercial fishing operations. The fleet currently consists of three trawlers – FV Frontier (launched in 2004), FV Legacy (launched in 2012) and FV Endeavor (launched in 2016) – one of the most modern fleets operating in New Zealand. All three ships are made of steel and are towed every two years.
After applying Propspeed to several superyachts on routine dry dock contracts, the Stark family were aware of the product. Discussions with Propspeed staff highlighted that the same benefits of clean propellers could apply to commercial fishing vessels, which is why a decision was made to prepare and coat each vessel’s propeller. during the next hauling in 2014.
“The benefits of Propspeed are clearly noticeable in terms of a much cleaner propeller when we transport the vessel for survey, maintenance and repairs,” said Andrew Stark, CEO of Ocean Fisheries. “Applying Propspeed has now become a must-have job at any haulage. Additionally, we have historically had issues with weed growth on the keel coolers for the main and auxiliary motors, the ice maker, hydraulics, and echo sounder transducers. After a discussion with Propspeed, we applied the product to echosounders and keel coolers on our last shipments of 2020 and we expect the same lack of growth to occur. We would not hesitate to recommend other trawler owners to apply Propspeed as it severely inhibits the growth of weeds and marine waters. In the case of keel coolers, it saves us time and money by using plungers to clean the coolers in the water, and increases refrigeration capacity and efficiency by allowing for increased cooling capacity during much longer periods.
“We are very pleased to hear that a successful commercial fishing fleet is reaping the real benefits of our product line,” said Chris Baird, CEO of Propspeed. “These ships are put to the test in constant use under very demanding conditions and the livelihoods and safety of the crew depend on their flawless operation. We are confident that they will continue to see positive results throughout the life of these boats.
Propspeed’s ultra-smooth topcoat is specially formulated to prevent marine growth from bonding to metal surfaces below the waterline. It is proven to support vessel preparation, increase efficiency, prevent corrosion, save fuel and reduce maintenance costs. It exhibits an exceptionally strong chemical and mechanical bond between the metal substrate, the etching primer and the clear coating – ensuring that the Propspeed coating actually adheres to the undercarriage and the vessel can perform at its peak throughout the season. .
