Tens of thousands of people were evacuated from low lying areas to shelters in India on Tuesday as Tropical Cyclone Yaas is expected to make landfall along the coast between West Bengal and Odisha early Wednesday morning local time.
The storm is expected to bring heavy rain, powerful storm surges and flooding, and the waves were approaching 30 feet high before making landfall. Fishing boats and trawlers had to be pulled from the sea as forecasters warned of dangerous waves.

The Indian Meteorological Department has reported wind speeds of up to 110 miles per hour, according to the Associated Press.
Yaas is just approaching 10 days after Cyclone Tauktae hit India’s west coast, killing more than 140 people. It also complicates the devastating outbreak of COVID-19 in the country.
