There is no way for me, an American who has only followed Spurs since 2007, to do obituary justice for what Greaves has meant to generations of Tottenham fans. Although I never got to see him play, his contribution to the game has been immense and laudatory. Greaves’ scoring record of 266 goals in 379 appearances is an incredible feat, and even with Harry Kane getting closer, he may never be beaten in modern play. He has also been prolific for England, scoring an incredible 44 goals in 57 appearances.
If you scour YouTube for Jimmy Greaves’ goal compilations, you begin to understand just how an incredible player and deadly finisher he was. His vision, his dribbling skills and his ability to get the ball in the net from almost anywhere made him virtually unplayable.
Things haven’t always been rosy between Tottenham and Spurs. Greaves had a notorious falling out with the club for decades after his sale to West Ham United in 1970. This feud lasted until 2016 when he finally returned to visit Spurs when he was inaugurated at the Temple. of Tottenham Hotspur fame. Last year, Greaves made the news again when he was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) at the age of 80, and even posed with Harry Kane.
In some ways, it’s only fitting that Greaves passed right before Tottenham played against Chelsea. While still known as a Tottenham legend, he also made 157 early career appearances for the Blues, scoring 125 goals. Both clubs have made statements about Greavesie’s passing, and the players will wear black armbands during today’s game. There will also be a celebration of his life with a minute of applause before kick-off.
Greavsie was an incredible sportsman and Tottenham from start to finish. We will miss him.
